1. Introduction

This guide provides a complete overview of the official driving rules, legal requirements, safety guidelines, and travel obligations for YalaRide customers renting a vehicle in Qatar. Driving in Doha and beyond offers modern highways but comes with high-speed traffic, strict electronic enforcement, and specific local driving customs that every visitor must know.

2. Driving Side & Road Basics

• Driving Side: Qatar drives on the right-hand side of the road.

• Overtaking: Overtaking is strictly done on the left.

• Fast Lane: The far-left lane is the "fast lane." If a vehicle behind you flashes its headlights, it is an aggressive signal to move over immediately. Do not brake check or block them.

• Roundabouts:

• Priority: Vehicles inside the roundabout have priority.

• Lane Discipline: Stay in the right lane to turn right; stay in the left/inner lane to go left or U-turn. Do not change lanes inside the roundabout.

• Flashing Lights: Unlike in some Western countries where flashing lights means "after you," in Qatar, it almost always means "Get out of the way, I am coming through."

3. Required Documents for Driving in Qatar

3.1 Mandatory Documents

• Passport (for foreigners only) with valid Visa.

• Valid driving licence:

• Visit/Tourist Visa: You can drive on your valid home country license for up to 15 days from the date of entry.

• Longer Stays: For stays longer than 15 days (up to 6 months), you must hold an International Driving Permit (IDP) alongside your national license.

• Residence Visa: Once you start the process for a Residence Permit, your international/home license becomes invalid, and you must obtain a Qatari Driving License.

• Vehicle Registration (Istimara): Provided by the rental operator (usually a card in the glovebox).

• Proof of Insurance: Provided by the rental operator.

• Rental Agreement.

4. Speed Limits in Qatar

Speed limits are enforced by a sophisticated network of fixed and mobile radars. Cameras often capture both speed and seatbelt/phone violations simultaneously.

4.2 Additional Rules

• Radar Buffer: Historically, there was a small "buffer" over the limit, but modern digital cameras are precise. It is safest to stick strictly to the posted limit.

5. Alcohol & Drugs (Zero Tolerance)

• Strict Prohibition: Qatar has zero tolerance for alcohol and driving.

6. Seatbelts, Child Seats & Safety Equipment

6.1 Seatbelts

• Seatbelts are mandatory for the driver and front passenger.

• Rear Passengers: While enforcement has historically been looser, it is strongly recommended (and legally safer) for all passengers to buckle up. New radars can detect unbelted drivers.

6.2 Child Safety

• Front Seat: Children under 12 years old are legally prohibited from sitting in the front passenger seat.

• Car Seats: Children under 4 years old must be secured in an appropriate child restraint system (car seat) in the rear.

6.3 Required Safety Equipment

• Fire Extinguisher: Mandatory.

• Running a Red Light: QAR 6,000 and potential impoundment.
