1. Introduction

This guide provides a complete overview of the official driving rules, legal requirements, safety guidelines, and travel obligations for YalaRide customers renting a vehicle in Poland. Polish traffic laws are strictly enforced, particularly regarding speed, alcohol limits, and specific vehicle equipment like fire extinguishers.

2. Driving Side & Road Basics

• Driving Side: Poland drives on the right-hand side of the road.

• Overtaking: Overtaking is done on the left.

• Priority:

• Right of Way: At uncontrolled intersections, you must yield to vehicles approaching from the right.

• Pedestrians: Pedestrians have absolute priority not only when they are on the crossing but also when they are entering it. You must stop if a pedestrian is waiting to cross.

• Green Arrow: You may turn right on a red light only if a separate green arrow signal is illuminated AND after coming to a full stop. You must yield to pedestrians and cross-traffic.

• Emergency Corridor (Korytarz Życia): In traffic jams, drivers are legally required to create a corridor for emergency vehicles (left lane moves left, right lanes move right).

3. Required Documents for Driving in Poland

3.1 Mandatory Documents

• Passport or National ID (for EU citizens).

• Valid driving licence:

• EU/EEA licenses are fully accepted.

• Non-EU licenses are generally accepted if they adhere to the Vienna Convention (Roman alphabet).

4.2 Additional Rules

• Speed Cameras: Fixed cameras are common and often marked with signs. Unmarked police cars with video recorders are also frequently used.

• "Area" Speed Limits: A rectangular sign with a speed limit (e.g., "Zone 30") applies to all streets in that area until cancelled.

5. Drink & Driving Rules (Strict)

• Legal Blood Alcohol Limit:0.2 ‰ (0.02%).

• 0.2 – 0.5 ‰: Considered a "misdemeanor." Result is a fine and license suspension.

• Over 0.5 ‰: Considered a crime. Punishable by imprisonment (up to 3 years), heavy fines, and a driving ban for several years.

• Zero Tolerance: In practice, the limit is so low that you should strictly adhere to a zero-tolerance policy. Police conduct frequent "sober mornings" (random mass breath testing).

6. Seatbelts, Child Seats & Safety Equipment

6.1 Seatbelts

• Seatbelts are mandatory for all occupants, front and rear.

6.2 Child Safety

• Children under 150 cm in height must be secured in an appropriate child restraint system (car seat/booster).

• Exceptions: If a child is at least 135 cm tall and cannot fit in a seat, they may use a seatbelt in the rear seat.

6.3 Required Safety Equipment

Poland has specific equipment laws that are strictly enforced:

• Fire Extinguisher:Mandatory. Every vehicle must carry a valid, accessible fire extinguisher. (Check the date on the rental's extinguisher).

• Warning Triangle:Mandatory.

• Reflective Vest: While technically required for exiting the car in rural areas at night/emergencies, it is highly recommended to have one for every passenger in the cabin.

7. Mobile Phone & Distraction Rules

8. Tolls & Motorways (Autostrady)

• State-Owned Motorways (A2 Konin-Stryków, A4 Wrocław-Gliwice): As of July 2023, tolls for light vehicles (< 3.5t) have been abolished on these specific state-run sections. They are free.

• Private Concession Motorways: Tolls still apply and are relatively expensive.

• A1 (AmberOne): Electronic payment (AmberGo app) or payment at gates.

• A2 (Świecko-Konin): Pay at toll gates.

• A4 (Katowice-Kraków): Pay at gates or use Videotolling (apps like Autopay, SkyCash) for a cheaper rate and faster lane.

• e-TOLL: This system is generally for trucks/buses (>3.5t). Standard rental cars usually do not need e-TOLL unless towing a large trailer that pushes the total weight over 3.5t.

9. Parking Regulations

• Paid Parking Zones (Strefa Płatnego Parkowania): Marked with signs.

• Payment: Usually via parking meters (Parkomat) using coins/card or mobile apps (e.g., SkyCash, Mobilet). You must display the ticket behind the windshield.

• Blue Envelopes: Parking spots painted blue with a wheelchair symbol are strictly for disabled permit holders. Fines for unauthorized parking here are massive.

• Sidewalk Parking: You may park on a sidewalk only if you leave at least 1.5 meters of width for pedestrians and the vehicle weight does not exceed 2.5t.

10. Low Emission Zones (SCT)

• Warsaw: Launched a Low Emission Zone (SCT) in July 2024.

• Restrictions: Older petrol and diesel cars are banned.

• Foreign Cars: While most modern rentals comply, foreign-registered vehicles often need to display a sticker or register in the system to avoid automatic fines, as foreign plates are not in the Polish central database.

• Kraków: A planned zone has been delayed (likely until 2026).

11. Lighting & Winter Driving

• Headlights:Mandatory 24/7. You must use dipped headlights or dedicated Daytime Running Lights (DRL) all year round, regardless of weather or time of day.

• Winter Tires: Not legally mandatory, but strongly recommended from November to April. Driving on summer tires in snow is considered negligence in case of an accident.
