Driving in Egypt is an intense experience; traffic flow is often organic rather than rule-based, and defensive driving is absolutely critical.

2. Driving Side & Road Basics

• Driving Side: Egypt drives on the right-hand side of the road.

• Overtaking: Overtaking is done on the left.

• The Horn: The car horn is a primary communication tool in Egypt. It is used constantly to signal presence ("I am here" or "I am passing"), not just for aggression.

• Traffic Flow: Lane markings are often ignored. Be prepared for vehicles drifting between lanes, sudden stops by microbuses, and pedestrians crossing major highways.

• Checkpoints: Police and military checkpoints are frequent on highways and desert roads. Slow down, turn on your interior light at night, and be prepared to show your documents.
